Organic Viticulture
What?
Organic viticulture is the first step towards a more sustainable farm and future. It is the step where we cross the threshold into a more thoughtful way of farming. Also, the focus shifts to decreasing inputs in the vineyard and begin to think about how are inputs effect the overall farm and ecosystem. Organic is a great and necessary step but it is just the beginning.
Organic vs. Organically Grown?
There is a difference in the wine being organic and if the grapes are grown organically. 100% organically grown means 100% of the grapes must be certified organically farmed. Whereas, to be considered an Organic wine, the grapes, additives and fining agents are organic. Additionally, no sulfur is permitted in the production process to be labeled as Organic wine.
*Organic does not require anything in regard to social and environmental sustainability. Vineyard workers/labor is not regulated, organic doesn’t mean that water is regulated and used sustainably nor if the wild environment is protected or in balance with the cultivated land.
Why?
The most important question. In short, because we have to, if we would like to continue farming and enjoying what mother nature can provide. Also, there has been multiple studies done proving the increase of the overall health of the farm in regard to the nutrient density and yield of the fruit. Generally, organic viticulture can be more productive and create an overall more superior product.
How?
The transition to organics can vary depending on the degree of conventional use prior. Most organizations require a minimum of three years of farming organically to be considered for certification.
